Guarantee Periods

All ATRF pensions are payable for the lifetime of the pensioner. Guarantee periods ensure that the pension will be paid for a minimum number of years.

The three Joint and Survivor Pensions are guaranteed for the first five years. In the event that the pensioner and spouse/pension partner are both deceased before the pension has been paid for 60 months (five years), the balance of the 60 months of payments are paid to a named beneficiary or the estate.

There are four Single Life Pension options:

  • No guarantee – pension payments cease with the death of the pensioner.
  • Guaranteed 5, 10, or 15 years – if the death of the pensioner occurs before the end of the guarantee period has passed, pension payments are made to the named beneficiaries to the end of the guarantee period. The guarantee period begins with the pension commencement date.
