ATRF Investment Management

Derek Brodersen, Chief Investment Officer

Derek Brodersen is responsible for the development and implementation of investment policies and strategies, as well as the overall management of the investment portfolio.

Mr. Brodersen joined ATRF in February 1997 as Portfolio Manager, Equities; he assumed the role of Chief Investment Officer in September 2008.

Mr. Brodersen holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Manitoba, an MBA from York University and CFA and ICD.D designations.

He serves on the board of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance and the Board Investment Committee of the University of Alberta.

Charlie Kim, Head of Public Equities

Charlie Kim is responsible for the management of ATRF's internal and global equity portfolios.  Mr. Kim participates in formulating investment strategy and determining ATRF's asset allocation as a senior member of the investment team.

Mr. Kim joined ATRF in September of 2008 as the Portfolio Manager, Equities.

Mr. Kim holds a Bachelor of Commerce, Finance Major, from the University of Alberta and a CFA designation.

Gary Smith, Head of Investment Strategy and Risk

Gary Smith is responsible for the Investment Strategy and Risk area within ATRF. This area acts as a resource to the other investment areas and assumes responsibility for a number of key areas including investment strategy, asset allocation, macroeconomic research, investment risk management, hedging/derivative strategies and ESG (environmental, social and governance) strategies.

Dr. Smith has a PhD in Finance from the University of Alberta, an MBA from the University of Saskatchewan and is a CFA Charterholder.

Darryl Orom, Head of Absolute Return Investments

Darryl Orom is responsible for the oversight and management of ATRF's absolute return program. Mr. Orom participates in formulating investment strategy and determining the ATRF's asset allocation.

Mr. Orom joined ATRF in September 2007 as the Portfolio Analyst, External Funds.

Mr. Orom holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta, the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) designation and is a Fellow of CSI (FCSI).

Kevin McDowell, Co-Head of Private Equity

Kevin McDowell is responsible for the oversight and management of ATRF's private equity program with specific oversight of the Funds investment portion of the portfolio. Mr. McDowell participates in formulating investment strategy and determining ATRF's asset allocation.

Mr. McDowell joined ATRF in June 2014 as a Senior Principal in the Private Investments program. Prior to joining ATRF, Mr. McDowell was a Senior Principal at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo). He worked at AIMCo for 14 years, most recently in the private equity team for over eight years and prior to that with the external public equity team for over five years. Mr. McDowell holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta, an MBA from the University of Alberta and the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He is a board member for the Institutional Limited Partners Association.

Kent Kirkpatrick, Co-Head of Private Equity

Kent Kirkpatrick is responsible for the oversight and management of ATRF's private equity program with specific responsibility for the Principal investment portion of the portfolio. Mr. Kirkpatrick participates in formulating investment strategy and determining the ATRF's asset allocation.

Mr. Kirkpatrick joined ATRF in March 2011 as a Senior Principal, Private Investments. Mr. Kirkpatrick holds an MBA from the Schulich School of Business and a BA in Economics from the University of Waterloo. He has also attained the CFA, CBV, and ICD.D designations. Mr. Kirkpatrick currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Venture Capital Association.

Jason Munsch, Head of Infrastructure

Jason Munsch is responsible for the oversight and management of ATRF's infrastructure program. Mr. Munsch participates in formulating investment strategy and determining ATRF's asset allocation.


Mr. Munsch joined ATRF in November 2010 as a Principal on the Private Investments team. He has over 11 years of experience in the infrastructure sector and has been involved in over $2 billion worth of direct power, transmission, pipelines, water and wastewater deals. Prior to joining ATRF, he was with Epcor Utilities. Mr. Munsch has an MBA from the University of Calgary and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta. He is also a designated CFA charterholder and holds the ICD.D designation.
